Mike made a startling entry into Test cricket by taking three for six in 20 balls against the West Indies at Old Trafford in 1976. He finished with four for 41 in the first innings and six wickets in the match, but still ended on the losing side - by 425 runs.
Mike was only given two more opportunities by England before settling back into a county career which began with Surrey and ended with him captaining Glamorgan for two seasons.
He first appeared on TMS in 1984 in Bombay and Delhi, where his sudden enforced withdrawal from the commentary box led to a first appearance by Vic Marks.
Soon after he became cricket correspondent of the Guardian, a role which he has continued to combine with the expert comments on TMS.
