Michael Vaughan has become the first England batsman for a decade to head the Test batting rankings.

He has moved above Matthew Hayden after the Australian managed scores of only 10 and 19 in the first Test against West Indies in Guyana.

Vaughan, who only reached the top 10 last September, is the first England player to be ranked number one since former skipper Graham Gooch.

He scored three centuries during the Ashes series in Australia during the winter and was the leading Test run-scorer in 2002 with an overall total of 1,481 runs.

Vaughan told the BBC Sport website: "I'm very pleased to be number one and hopefully this is just the start.

"I need to score lots of runs to stay there and that's what I'll be hoping to do this summer.

"When I look at the list of players in the top 10 it makes me proud to be among them."

The Yorkshire opener will play seven Tests this summer, injuries permitting - two against Zimbabwe and five against South Africa.

He is also a leading candidate to succeed Nasser Hussain as England one-day captain this summer following the latter's decision to concentrate solely on Test cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis and Adam Gilchrist remain in places three to five, but Australian vice-captain Ricky Ponting advances four places to sixth after his century against West Indies.

The most significant rise in the bowling rankings has been made by Australian Jason Gillespie, who moves up five places to seventh.

Compatriot Glenn McGrath remains at number one ahead of Muttiah Muralitharan and Shaun Pollock, with England's Andy Caddick filling sixth place.
