England youngsters win
1st Youth Test, Adelaide: England U19 (331 & 366) beat Australia U19 (414 & 269) by 14 runs

England's under-19 side have triumphed where the senior team failed, downing their Australian counterparts by 14 runs in the first Youth Test in Adelaide.

An excellent display in the field saw England cut their hosts short as they chased a victory target of 284 at the picturesque St Peter's College.

Skipper Bilal Shafayat, took six for 54 in a devastating spell, following a first innings century and 66 as England wiped out a deficit of 83.

Nick Thornicroft and Tim Bresnan had put on an invaluable 72 runs for the last England wicket as they finished with a second innings 366.

Australia started their assault in typical fashion, rattling up 68 runs off 11 overs before Liam Davis became Shafayat's first victim for 34.

Fellow opener Matthew Harrison followed two balls later caught by Samit Patel off the bowling of Bresnan for 32.

When Greg Hunt went in the next over, caught by Liam Plunkett again off Shafayat, Australia were in a mess at 76 for three.

Theo Doropoulos fell lbw to Patel for 40 and once Michael Bright was caught off Shafayat for 65 the end was in sight.

There was jubilation as Shafayat had Matthew Gale caught behind by wicket-keeper Andrew Hodd for a duck to wrap up the game, the first of three.
