Waugh out of Aussie squad
Steve Waugh
Waugh is a veteran of 325 one-day internationals
Australian Test captain Steve Waugh has been left out of his country's World Cup squad.

Waugh led the Australians to victory in the tournament in 1999 but has not featured in one-day internationals since February, when he was replaced as captain by Ricky Ponting.

The veteran of 325 one-day internationals, he had been hoping for a recall to Australia's 15-man squad but his hopes were quashed following Tuesday's announcement.

Spinner Shane Warne was selected despite dislocating his shoulder in the recent VB series against England.

But he remains a major fitness doubt, and may sit out the pool phase of February's tournament in the hope he will be available for the final matches.

"We're going to try to make sure he gets every opportunity to be on that plane across to South Africa," Australia coach John Buchanan said.

"If he wasn't available from the outset, we would like to think he was playing at least by mid-tournament, that's my view."

Under the tournament rules, Warne can be replaced if his injury prevents him playing.

He is expected to start bowling again in less than two weeks, with the Australians due to fly to South Africa on 30 January.

"He was a huge player for us at the World Cup last time and he's the best spin bowler in the world. To have him out of the side would be a huge blow to us," said Ponting.

"I've just got my fingers crossed and I hope that he comes up."

Their opening pool match is against Pakistan in Johannesburg on 11 February, but the second phase of the tournament does not start until 7 March.

'Match-winning potential'

In a squad of few surprises Brad Hogg got the nod ahead of Nathan Hauritiz for the second spinner's spot.

Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson are named as the all-rounders, while Queensland opener Jimmy Maher is the extra batsman included.

Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said: "Brad replaced Shane Warne in the series match in Perth and given his performance there, on top of his excellent one-day form of the past few seasons, he deserves his spot as back-up.

"Andrew Symonds offers us variety and match-winning potential. He is a player we feel is ready to offer us a consistent all-round package."

Australia: Ricky Ponting (captain), Adam Gilchrist, Michael Bevan, Andy Bichel, Jason Gillespie, Matthew Hayden, Brad Hogg, Brett Lee, Darren Lehmann, Jimmy Maher, Damien Martyn, Glenn McGrath, Andrew Symonds, Shane Warne, Shane Watson.

Cricket World Cup 2003 begins on 8 February in South Africa
