Harris out for Kiwis
Chris Harris
Harris has bowled just eight first-class overs this season
All-rounder Chris Harris will miss New Zealand's first two one-day internationals against India after failing to recover fully from a shoulder injury.

Harris, who has 3955 runs and 192 wickets in 216 one-day internationals, has bowled only eight first-class overs in three matches this year.

Until the [World Cup] deadline is reached we will be watching closely

Also missing from the 12-man squad are Chris Cairns, still recovering from a knee operation, and Andre Adams, who has back trouble.

Scott Styris was dropped six months after claiming six for 25 against the West Indies - the best bowling figures by a New Zealander.

"The door is by no means shut and the onus is on him and others to score some runs and take some wickets at domestic level," said chairman of selectors Richard Hadlee.

New Zealand completed a 2-0 Test series victory on Sunday with a four-wicket win in Hamilton.

The one-day series begins in Auckland on Thursday and continues in Napier next Sunday.

The sides play seven ODIs in all, but have only the first two matches before they must submit a final 15-man World Cup squad on 31 December.

"Clearly we have a fairly good idea of who will fill most of those spots but until the deadline is reached we will be watching closely," said Hadlee.

Brendon McCullum, who played as an opening batsman last year, is the latest candidate to keep wicket, taking over from Chris Nevin.

Domestic talent

India have added bowlers Ashish Nehra and Rakesh Patel to their squad.

Nehra gained the nod after his impressive effort in the second Test, while uncapped medium-pacer Patel, 24, has been rewarded for his domestic performances.

The rest of the 16-man party was named last week, along with a list of 30 World Cup probables.

Fast bowler Javagal Srinath, leg-spinner Anil Kumble and batsman Yuvraj Singh will also join the touring party.

Batsman Shiv Sundar Das, fast bowler Tinu Yohannan, spinner Murali Kartik and wicket-keeper Ajay Ratra return home.

New Zealand squad for first two ODIs: Stephen Fleming (capt), Nathan Astle, Shane Bond, Paul Hitchcock, Kyle Mills, Brendon McCullum, Craig McMillan, Jacob Oram, Daryl Tuffey, Mathew Sinclair, Daniel Vettori, Lou Vincent.

India squad for whole series: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh, Sanjay Bangar, Zaheer Khan, Javagal Srinath, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Ajit Agarkar, Parthiv Patel, VVS Laxman, Ashish Nehra, Rakesh Patel.
