The death of his brother and birth of a baby daughter were two major events that forced Hollioake into a re-think.
Where once the focus of sporting ambition might have been unyielding, the Hollioake of today is more mindful of forces he cannot control. "The sun still comes up for me in the morning and I'm just happy for that at the moment," Hollioake told BBC Sport Online at the end of the domestic season. "I just take each day as it comes and if good things come then good but if bad things come then I'll deal with it." A good thing came when England summoned him for a long-awaited and most deserved recall. It takes him back to the land he called home as a boy and the one that tragically claimed his brother this March. Hollioake, who captained England to one-day success in the Sharjah Cup in 1997, has not represented his country since the 1999 World Cup. All year Hollioake has maintained he wanted to play for his country again, but all along insisted it was not important if he did not.
When Hollioake says he takes each day as it comes, he is not dishing out cliches or feigning indifference to selectors. "I mean who knows, my next game of cricket could be the last game I ever play or I could go on to become the Prime Minister of England." A World Cup berth for Hollioake is now a real possibility. "It is a an honour to play for your country and if I get selected for the World Cup then that will be a fantastic opportunity. "The World Cup is every cricketer's dream and if I get the call then I will give it my all but it is not something I think about. "People have a job to do and I understand that the selectors have a job to do to pick the best side. "Come the World Cup they will do that in their opinion, but I don't set goals about things like that or how many runs I am going to score." Ready to retire Hollioake was ready to retire from cricket earlier in the year, but was dissuaded from doing so by his father. He subsequently hit the heights with Surrey, captaining the county to a stunning championship victory and playing some memorable knocks himself. But the clarity of Hollioake's performances belied the muddled mind of a man grappling with the adversities of life.
"Every year is a hard year but obviously this year was a lot more tiring than other years. "I guess sport and life are two different things and in some senses you're trained all your life to put your off-field things in your life behind you. "But there are some things that you just can't prepare for and there were times when it was very tough to get on with things." Hollioake must now get on with the reality of international cricket, and England have called upon a cricketer that will give his all. But if he fails, no matter. The sun will still rise. |
