Eastern Province in crisis
St george's Park is home of Eastern Province cricket

The United Cricket Board of South Africa has begun legal action against Eastern Province officials amid allegations of financial mismanagement.

Officials are concerned that planning for next year's World Cup semi-final, due to be staged in Port Elizabeth, could be affected unless urgent action is taken.

The Eastern Province Cricket Board (EPCB) is in disarray following a series of resignations, most recently president Ronnie Pillay who stepped down last weekend, and the suspension of Board member Rajan Moodaley.

The UCB has therefore applied to the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court in Grahamstown for an order to provisionally place the EPCB under judicial management.

"Independent findings have shown financial mismangement, lack of transparency and inadequte corporate governance in the province," said UCB chief executive Gerald Majola.

Gerald Majola believes intervention is essential

"The 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final match is only nine months away and it is important that we take steps to safeguard this important match, as well as other World Cup games.

"The World Cup semi-final was allocated to St George's Park in recognition of over a century of passion for cricket among all the peoples of the Eastern Cape.

"We cannot jeopardize this and must act decisively."

If the application is successful, it could lead to a Judicial Manager being put in charge of Eastern Province cricket, reporting directly to the UCB.

The action has been taken under Section 427 of the South African Companies Act.
