Former Pakistan all-rounder turned teacher Wasim Raja believes cricket's new code of conduct will bring the sort of discipline to the game he tried to instil in his pupils.

He is preparing for his first official assignment since being appointed as one of the International Cricket Council's five full-time match referees.

Raja will officiate in the forthcoming West Indies v New Zealand series and is hoping it will be trouble free.

"The new code of conduct is straight and simple and will produce good results as far as cricket discipline is concerned," Raja told BBC Sport Online in an exclusive interview.

"Since its introduction in April, you can the see the results are really good because players know that they have to abide by this code.

  Career of Wasim Raja
DOB: 3.7.1952
Test debut: Feb 1973, Wellington v New Zealand
Tests: 57
Runs: 2821
Wkts: 51
ODI debut: Feb 1973, Christchurch, against New Zealand
ODIs: 54
Runs: 782
Wkts: 21

"And the reason is that the competition in the game is really tough and if a player is banned for a certain period, it may end his career altogether.

"It will also improve the image of the game, so the ICC's involvement is a welcome thing at the end.

Raja says the new rules have given more powers to umpires in the field to ensure smooth games.

"Now, a referee can take up only the matters reported by the field umpires. I think it's a good step."

He also favours the use of more and more technology in cricket.

"It's there to use. When the third umpire was introduced for close run-out calls, it was opposed, but everyone appreciates this technology now.

"The role of technology is very important and I am sure it will be used widely in the years to come.

Coaching assignments

The former Test player was nominated by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for his new role as match referee.

And even through he has spent much of his time in school over the past decade, he has kept in touch with cricket.

"After my retirement in 1986, I played in the Lancashire league and for Durham and have been coaching Surrey's under-17 team. I am also still playing for their over-50s team."

Wasim has been a geography and physical education teacher at a Surrey school since 1990, but has now had to give the job up.

"Teaching is not new to me. In 1975, I taught for a year in Lahore's Aitcheson College and it was always my intention to return to teaching after my retirement from cricket.

"Teaching for me is very fulfilling and personally satisfying experience.

He obtained a masters degree in Pakistan and a teaching qualification in the UK and has experience in both countries.

"Student-life was more fun-filled in Pakistan, whereas teaching was livelier in the UK. I will always miss it."
