"You've got to be fit, you've got to be ready and I want to be considered if someone gets injured or the form of another player drops," Waugh said. The batsman was replaced as skipper and dropped from the side in February after the home side failed to make the finals of the triangular series against South Africa and New Zealand.
"I'm hoping to be first in that queue, so I've got to put myself in that position by getting runs, taking wickets if I bowl, just playing good cricket. "If I can get the performances on the board, then you're going to be forcing the selectors' hand somewhat if a position becomes available." Time running out Waugh, and brother Mark, were both named last week in the Australian Cricket Board's list of 25 contracted players for the next year, That indicates they are unlikely to be dropped from the Test side but time is running out for the twins to make their mark again in one-day cricket. Australia play three one-day internationals against Pakistan in July, during the Southern Hemisphere winter, before travelling to Sri Lanka for an ICC tournament in September. The team then tours Pakistan, but may not play any limited-overs cricket, with three Tests planned and only a month available for the trip. Australia's next one-day fixtures are at home to England and Sri Lanka in December - just three months before the beginning of the World Cup. "I want to make sure I give it my best shot at trying to get back in there," Waugh said. "I don't want to sit back in a few years' time and say, 'I wish I would've tried harder to get back into that one-day side.' "I want to make sure I've done everything possible to try to get back there. I don't want to go half-hearted." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Cricket stories: Links to more Cricket stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
