Teenager Mali Richards, the son of West Indies Test legend Sir Viv, is considering the possibility of seeking a future in international cricket with England.

The 18-year-old, who was born in Somerset while his father was playing for the county, is currently studying at Cheltenham College.

He is a promising left-handed batsman who scored 958 runs in schoolboy cricket last summer at an average of more than 56, and has attracted interest from Gloucestershire and Worcestershire.

"My ambition is to play international cricket, for the West Indies hopefully. But if the chance did come along for me to play for England, I'd probably take it," Richards junior told the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

"The next step for me is to try and get into a county side - hopefully as an English-qualified player."

Sir Viv, who scored 8, 540 runs in 121 Tests and captained West Indies in 50 matches between 1980 and 1991, said he would not stand in his son's way, whatever decision he makes.

"For sure, I would certainly be trying to do some convincing to tell him where I think his allegiance should lie, but if I can't get it through that it is here in the West Indies, I have no problem wherever he wants to play," he was quoted as saying.

Mali has played cricket for Antigua, his father's native island, but has also made one appearance for Gloucestershire's second XI against Lancashire last summer.

Worcestershire's assistant coach Damian D'Oliveira confirmed that they were monitoring the youngsters's progress.

"I know he played here at Worcesters last year in the Chesterton Cup final and got 60 or 70.

"We'll perhaps have a look at him in a match situation once he's got his A levels out of the way," D'Oliveira told BBC Sport Online.
