![]() | Saturday, 27 April, 2002, 15:11 GMT 16:11 UK SA start selectors shake-up ![]() Pollock's position as captain could still be under threat South Africa's selectors will be replaced by a four-man panel within the next two weeks as part of the major changes being made by the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB). UCB chief Gerald Majola said the newly formed National Cricket Committee (NCC) would make a recommendation after the country's nine provinces had made nominations for the panel. The NCC, which includes former Test players Andrew Hudson, Craig Matthews, Omar Henry and Pat Symcox as well as Haroon Lorgat and Imraan Munshie, will also review the structure of the national management team.
Majola made the announcement on Saturday as the UCB was formally split into a professional and amateur wing. The NCC was formed following a brain-storming session on Monday to address the problems that have blighted the national side in the run up to the 2003 World Cup. Shaun Pollock's team were whitewashed 3-0 in the Test series in Australia and embarrassed at home before taking a consolation victory. With the World Cup beginning in the Republic next February there were few encouraging signs as they crashed 5-1 in the one-day series, with one match tied. "Once the new panel has been approved, they will select within a week approximately 25 players as part of an initial training squad for next year's World Cup," said Majola. The management structure will, however, only be reviewed completely by the beginning of June, meaning that the training squad will be in the care of the current team. Pollock review South Africa's incumbent six-man selection panel convened by Rushdie Magiet has attracted some vehement criticism from various quarters, including former players. Current members, however, are not precluded from being part of the new panel. Pollock and Ford came under fire for being to slow in making changes when games began to slip. UCB president Percy Sonn added that Pollock's position would also be reviewed. "We'll be looking at the captaincy and we need advice on it," said Sonn. "If the incumbent falls short then action will be taken. However, if he doesn't fall short, we won't." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Cricket stories: Links to more Cricket stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
