![]() | Friday, 29 March, 2002, 00:03 GMT Waqar retains Pakistan captaincy ![]() Waqar has been a great servant for Pakistani cricket By BBC Sport Online's special correspondent in Pakistan The Pakistan Cricket Board has kept faith in Waqar Younis and retained him as captain for the forthcoming home series against New Zealand. Coach Mudassar Nazar has also hung on to his post despite the humiliating home defeat by Sri Lanka in the Asian Test Championship final. "We have appointed Waqar as captain for the home series against New Zealand," Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Lieutenant General Tauqir Zia told BBC Sport Online. "And, although I foresee him leading Pakistan in the 2003 World Cup, we stick to our policy of appointing the captain series-by-series.
"We want to keep a check on the team's performance, Waqar's fitness and his performance, so it's better to go series-by-series." There had been speculation that Waqar would be sacked following the Sri Lanka defeat. And he could still be axed ahead of the World Cup in South Africa if Pakistan perform badly against either New Zealand or Australia, who are due to tour in October. Waqar has been under increasing pressure after reportedly falling out with senior players, including Wasim Akram, Saqlain Mushtaq and Inzamam-ul Haq.
Despite the recent setbacks, Waqar remains optimistic that he can lead his talented but under-performing side to success. "I endorse the board's policy to go series-by-series, because I too want to analyse my captaincy after every series," he said. "I am learning with every experience and would not like to cost my team if I don't do well. "I wish to lead Pakistan in the 2003 World Cup but I must give continuous results." New Zealand's rescheduled tour, postponed following the 11 September terrorist attacks on the USA, will take place from 24 April to 12 May. The two sides will play three limited-overs internationals and two Tests. | See also: Other top Cricket stories: Links to more Cricket stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||
