![]() | Monday, 25 March, 2002, 08:31 GMT Players can attend Hollioake funeral ![]() Floral tributes have been laid at The Oval Members of the England cricket squad are to be allowed to fly to Australia for the funeral of their team-mate Ben Hollioake, who was killed in a road accident. A memorial service will take place at a church near Fremantle on Wednesday, with a private cremation the following day. The funeral will take place just two days before England begin the third and final Test of their series against New Zealand in Auckland. England currently lead the series 1-0. England management will not stand in the way of any player who wishes to make the eight-hour flight to Perth to pay their respects. "I don't think we can hold people back. It's not a cricketing decision, that is a personal decision everyone will have to take," said captain Nasser Hussain.
Surrey, the county Hollioake played for, said 10 players and three club officials were flying out for the funeral. The family have agreed to allow the club to hold a memorial service in his name and a book of condolence has been started at the Oval. A post mortem has been carried out on the 24-year-old, who died when his Porsche 924 left the road in Perth in the early hours of Saturday morning. His 22-year-old girlfriend Janaya Scholten, who was a passenger in the car, suffered serious head and chest injuries and is said to be in a "critical but stable" condition at the Royal Perth Hospital. Cause unknown Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash prior to submitting a report to the coroner, who will then decide whether to hold an inquest. Police said there was no obvious reason for the crash and no marks on the road to indicate high speed.
"There can be a lot of oil on the road at this time of year and there had been some rain earlier in the evening," commented Inspector Ian Duggan. Hollioake only recently left New Zealand after playing for England in the one-day series. He was spending time in Perth with his family, including elder brother and Surrey team-mate Adam, prior to returning to England for the new county season. Hollioake's death overshadowed the second Test in Wellington, which ended in a draw on Monday. Hussain said after the match that the lunch interval on the third day of the Test was hard to bear. "When you're out there in the morning you've got a mate called Ben and when you come back at lunch-time you haven't," he said. Westminster pays tribute The tragic death was mentioned at the House of Commons on Monday. Sports Minister Richard Caborn said: "Many would say this accident has robbed us of one of our brightest young talents." For the Conservatives, Anne McIntosh said his "tragic loss" had deprived the country of a "very talented young cricketer". |
