![]() | Tuesday, 19 February, 2002, 16:06 GMT England women seek tourist following ![]() New Zealand beat England during the 2000 World Cup The England and Wales Cricket Board is planning to target the tourist trade when international cricket is played on the island of Jersey for the first time this summer. The Grainville club will stage three matches in a triangular one-day series featuring the England, New Zealand and India women's teams. They will take place in mid-July when the Channel Islands will be full of holiday makers and the ECB hopes they can attract sizeable crowds to the games by advertising in hotels. "The island is full of tourists at that time and we'll obviously targetting them with a view to them coming to watch and support the games," said Chris Minty, ECB development officer for the Channel Islands. "We'll also be talking to the schools, encouraging them to bring children along for a morning or an afternoon."
Cricket is well-established on the island, with more than 30 clubs involved in weekend and evening leagues, and Middlesex will be playing games on the island as part of their build-up to the 2002 county season. Attracting New Zealand, the women's World Cup holders, to Jersey is, however, a bonus for local followers of the game. "We look upon it as an honour to be asked to stage these games," said Minty. "It's very pleasing to think that being part of the England and Wales Cricket Board means that we've got access to this type of cricket and that they see the possibilities of staging it here." The triangular competition, the second half of which will take place in Durham, will be England's first since Australian John Harmer took over as the team's full-time coach. They will be looking to bounce back following whitewash defeats at the hands of Australia and India in their last two series.
