![]() | Monday, 4 February, 2002, 10:56 GMT Pace ace skittles Windies ![]() Rashid Latif runs out Sherwin Campbell First Test, Sharjah, day five: Pakistan 493 & 214-6 declared beat West Indies 366 & 171 by 170 runs Paceman Shoaib Akhtar shrugged off last year's controversy about his bowling action by producing the best figures of hisTest career to help bowl Pakistan to a convincing victory. Akhtar took five for 24 and was well supported by Abdur Razzaq, who claimed four for 24 as West Indies lost their last nine wickets for 60 runs in the afternoon session. It was a dismal batting effort by Carl Hooper's side, with the exception of Chris Gayle, who hammered 15 fours in an innings of 66 which raised hopes of a surprise win for his side. West Indies have now lost four successive Tests, having suffered a 3-0 whitewash in Sri Lanka last year. They began the day on 25 for no wicket after Pakistan skipper Waqar Younis set them a target of 342 on Sunday.
He chose to rely on spinners Danish Kaneria and Saqlain Mushtaq during the morning session, but it did not pay off as Gayle went on the attack. The Jamaican left-hander hit four boundaries in one over from Kaneria, and took three off another from Saqlain, during which he reached his fifty. The introduction of Akhtar, whose action was twice reported to the International Cricket Council during 2001, led to the breakthrough as he sent down five maidens in his first six overs and bowled Daren Ganga for 34 to end an opening stand of 76. West Indies reached lunch on 11 for one with Gayle on 64 not out, but he added only two more after the resumption before Akhtar found a way through his defences. Akhtar bowled four batsmen in all, a fitting reward for maintaining an arrow straight line and full length on a slow wicket, and also had Wavell Hinds caught behind. Campbell was run out for 20 and six wickets went down for 19 runs - three of them in a single over from Razzaq, who had Shivnarine Chanderpaul caught behind with his first ball and Hooper and Ridley Jacobs lbw with the fifth and sixth. Last man Pedro Collins hit two successive fours in a brief show of defiance but was bowled for 12 by Razzaq's next delivery as the first-ever Test at the venue came to an emphatic end.
