Honours for England captains
Hussain and England bowler Matthew Hoggard
Hussain gained plaudits for his performance in India
Nasser Hussain and Tony Lewis - England captains of past and present - have been recognised in the New Year Honours list.

Hussain was given an OBE for his efforts in galvanising the England side since he took over in conjunction with coach Duncan Fletcher in June 1999.

And Lewis received a CBE for his lifelong service to the sport as player, administrator and broadcaster.

"This is great news," enthused Hussain, who is making preparations to depart for England's second leg of their winter tour to India and New Zealand.

Tactically Nasser is very strong but he is also passionate about leading his country
David Graveney
"Everyone knows how much playing for England means to me and I'm very proud to have been honoured by my country in this way.

"I'd like to thank all the England players, Duncan and all the backroom staff for all of their support since I took over as England's captain."

Hussain recovered from series losses to new Zealand and South Africa at the beginning of his tenure to record four consecutive series victories, at home against Zimbabwe and West Indies and on tour in pakistan and Sri Lanka.

He has not been able to help England maintain that form this year, as they slipped to defeats against Australia last summer and a 1-0 verdict in India in December.

But he has impressed many observers with the manner in which he has led the side.

National pride

England chairman of selectors David Graveney said that Hussain had become one of the outstanding England captains of all time.

"It's a well-deserved reward for Nasser," said Graveney

"Tactically, Nasser is very strong, but he is also passionate about leading his country.

"He is proud to stride out in front of his men, and he has taken that passion and given it to the other players."

Hussain has been capped 66 times by England since making his debut against the West Indies in 1990. He was appointed captain in June 1999.

His highest Test score is 207 - against Australia at Edgbaston in 1997 - and he has scored 3,726 Test runs, including nine centuries and 19 fifties, averaging 35.15.

MCC president

Hussain is joined on the honours list by Lewis, a former England captain who receives a CBE for his lifelong service to the sport in a variety of roles.

Tony Lewis
Lewis has just stepped down as MCC president
Lewis, who captained England on the 1972/3 tour to India and Pakistan, has just stepped down from his two-year spell as president of the MCC.

His reign has marked some of the biggest changes in the famous club's history.

He oversaw the building of the spaceship-like media centre at the Nursery End of Lord's cricket ground, whose innovative design has won many architectural awards.

But perhaps his biggest achievement was persuading MCC members to finally admit women into the club more than 200 years after it was first founded.

As a major figure in Welsh sport he was also a prime mover in securing golf's Ryder Cup tournament for Newport in 2010.

"I'm absolutely delighted," Lewis said of the award.

"There's no warmer feeling than knowing that a lot of my colleagues have backed me.

"I've enjoyed everything I've done. I've gone to work every day enjoying it."
