Thorpe fills the gap

Thorpe will strengthen England's batting line-up
Graham Thorpe and Chris Silverwood have been drafted into the England squad for the forthcoming one-day series in Zimbabwe.

They replace all-rounder Craig White and fast bowler James Ormond, who were ruled out of the trip because of knee injuries.

White twisted his right knee during training last week, while Ormond, who made his England debut in the final Ashes Test against Australia, is suffering from tendinitis.

Lancashire's Andrew Flintoff was given the green light, however, following treatment to a sore right thumb.

Thorpe was left out of the original party because of concern about a hand injury, but he has now been given the all-clear.

The Surrey batsman averages almost 40 after 68 one-day appearances for England, despite a highest score of 89.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney confirmed that Thorpe was "very much" part of England's plans for the 2003 World Cup.

Silverwood: Now free of a rib problem

"While Graham Thorpe may not appear a like for like swap for Craig White, the selectors had planned to use Craig in the top three in the batting order and felt that we needed an experienced batsman as his replacament," said Graveney.

"As we are already without our two major strike bowlers for this series, as well as Craig White, we have decided to call up Chris Silverwood in order to give us the cutting edge that we will need with the ball in Zimbabwe."

Silverwood came through a check on a rib problem which has troubled him during the summer and will be returning to the county where he made his England debut in 1996-97.

The Yorkshireman will be looking to improve a one-day international record which has seen him manage only three wickets in six games.

England's 16-man squad will leave on Wednesday for the two and a half week tour.

They will play a warm-up game against Zimbabwe A next Monday, before starting the one-day series two days later.
