"Scotland threw away their first chance to qualify for the 2003 World Cup"

Scotland's World Cup hopes hang in the balance
Outsiders Namibia qualified for the cricket World Cup after beating Scotland by nine runs at the ICC Trophy tournament in Toronto.

The result gave Namibia a place in Sunday's final against Holland, as well as one of the three spots on offer for the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.

Fast bowler Burton van Rooi did the damage for Namibia, taking six for 43 including a spell of three wickets for three runs in eight balls.

"He was the difference in what was a wonderful game of cricket," Scotland manager Jim Love admitted.

The Scots, chasing 258 for victory, were bowled out for 247, after initially coasting at 199 for four with 10 overs remaining.

But a couple of careless run outs as well as Van Rooi's heroics, saw them lose their last six wickets for 22 runs.

Colin Smith and Drew Parsons had earlier impressed, putting on 127 for the third wicket.

Smith was close to securing victory for Scotland but on 88, he inexplicably heaved across the line against Van Rooi and was bowled.

Agony at the death

Van Rooi, 19, showed great maturity with clever use of the slower ball that led to both Gregor Maiden and Craig Wright's dismissals.

He finished the match when last man Keith Sheridan was out leg before on his first ball, leaving Asim Butt unbeaten on nine.

Earlier Namibia opener and captain Daniel Keulder led from the front with 104 off 137 balls including one six and nine fours as the African side piled up 257 for six in their 50 overs.

He received good support from fellow opener Riaan Walters (43 from 46 balls) and wicket-keeper Melt van Schoor (32 not out from 33 balls).

If Scotland are to qualify for their second successive World Cup they must bounce back in Tuesday's sudden death third-fourth place play-off against hosts Canada.
