Miandad removed as Pakistan coach

Javed Miandad has been removed as coach of Pakistan.

The former captain lost his job on Tuesday following Pakistan's disappointing tour of New Zealand and amid allegations of a rift involving senior players.

No successor has been announced, but the Pakistan Cricket Board has confirmed it will be seeking an overseas replacement, prompting speculation that Geoff Boycott could be offered the job.

The PCB also announced that Waqar Younis would be captain for the triangular tournament in Sharjah later this month in place of the injured skipper Moin Khan.

A spokesman said the decision to replace the coach had been taken because Miandad was needed to work at PCB headquarters in Lahore.

"The chairman of the PCB wants Miandad to look after the day-to-day affairs in the cricket headquarters," the spokesman said.

Miandad had been appointed to guide the team through to the 2003 World Cup in South Africa but paid the price for a string of poor results.

Pakistan lost a five-match one-day series in New Zealand 3-2 and were humiliated by an innings and 185 runs in the final Test of the three-match series.

Miandad had earlier offered to relinquish his position, insisting: "I have offered to resign before and will step down if asked."

The 43-year-old previously held the post from September 1998 until April 1999 when he resigned.

He was reappointed to the role in March last year.

Miandad's position was under threat even before a report, alleged to be from team manager Faqir Aizazuddin, was leaked to Pakistan daily newspaper, Dawn.

The report said a serious rift between Miandad and senior players had marred the team's performance in New Zealand.

"Although Miandad wanted to combine the players' efforts, talent and experience, the senior members of the side gave little thoughts to his words," the PCB said.

Aizazuddin denied compiling the report, but the paper stuck by its story.

The deposed Miandad had accepted on his return to Pakistan that the tour had not been a success, but rejected the report's claims.

"Overall it was not a satisfactory tour. There is no rift in the team," he said. "We completed the tour without any problem but defeat brings such things with it.

"We had a very young team but we should have won the Test series," he said.

Inzamam-ul-Haq, who was tipped to replace Moin, is retained as vice-captain of a team that does not include injured regulars Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Azhar Mahmood and Yousuf Youhana.

The selectors also named uncapped paceman Kashif Raza and recalled off-spinner Shoaib Malik and all-rounder Yasir Arafat.

Squad: Waqar Younis (captain), Inzamam-ul-Haq (vice-captain), Imran Nazir, Shahid Afridi, Saeed Anwar, Imran Farhat, Faisal Iqbal, Younis Khan, Abdur Razzaq, Humayun Farhat (wicketkeeper), Mohammad Sami, Saqlain Mushtaq, Shoaib Malik, Yasir Arafat and Kashif Raza.
