![]() | Monday, 29 January, 2001, 14:53 GMT Mongia back in favour ![]() Mongia: Will compete for a place with Vijay Dahiya Wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia has been recalled to the Indian squad after being cleared of match-fixing allegations. The 31-year-old has not played for his country since the Asia Cup tournament last June, but could now makes his international comeback in the forthcoming home series against Australia. Mongia was among five Indian players, past and present, who were named in a report on corruption in cricket produced by the Central Bureau of Investigation last year. But he was exonerated by an inquiry set up by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Mongia has taken 94 catches and made seven stumpings in 42 Tests, and has also appeared in 140 one-day internationals. He is a more than useful batsman, as he proved with an innings of 152 against Australia at Delhi five years ago. The 25-man squad for next month's six-day training camp in Madras also includes medium-pacer Debashish Mohanty and slow left-armer Venkatapathy Raju. Mohanty became the fifth Indian bowler in history to take all 10 wickets in an innings while playing for East Zone against South Zone in a Duleep Trophy game last week. Raju, meanwhile, has been recalled as the selectors look to compensate for the absence of leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who has undergone shoulder surgery. He played the last of his 27 Tests against Australia three years ago. Australia's opening three-day match against India A, which starts on 17 February, may be switched from Baroda following the earthquake in Gujarat state. Nagpur is a possible alternative venue for the game.
