Afridi given all clear

Afridi bowls Ashley Giles in Lahore
A panel of former Pakistan Test players has given leg-spinner Shahid Afridi's bowling action the all clear.

Match referee Barry Jarman reported Afridi to the International Cricket Council following the one-day internationals against England last year.

The 20-year-old took five wickets in the second match at Lahore and doubts were expressed about the legality of his faster delivery.

  Afridi's bowling record
20 wickets in 11 Tests, average 29.20
78 wickets in 120 ODIs, average 44.23

The Pakistan Cricket Board were subsequently asked to form a panel to study videos of his action under the new three-stage reporting and review process implemented by the ICC.

They appointed former leg-spinner Abdu Qadir, Mohsin Kamal and Ejaz Faqih, and the trio have decided his action is legitimate. Their findings will be forwarded to the ICC next week.

"Afridi's faster ones had come under suspicion, but we found nothing wrong in it," said Qadir.

Afridi is in Pakistan's preliminary squad for the tour to New Zealand, which begins next month.

"I knew there was no problem in my bowling action and feel relieved on being cleared. Now I will concentrate on my perfromance on the New Zealand tour," he said.

If Afridi is reported again within the next 12 months, ICC rules stipulate that they will have the right to appoint their own assessor to study his action.
