Sharp-shooter Hammond wins rifle gold

Scotland's Jon Hammond and England duo Richard Brickell and Parag Patel all won gold medals on the final day of the shooting at the Commonwealth Games.

Hammond won a second Delhi gold in the 50m rifle prone final, with Northern Ireland's Matt Hall taking bronze.

Brickell took the men's skeet event, beating defending champion Georgios Achilleos of Cyprus on countback.

Patel pipped Aussie James Corbett to gold in the full bore singles, Northern Ireland's David Calvert taking bronze.

Patel fired a score of 396, with Corbett notching 395 and Calvert two further back with 393.

It was Patel's second medal of the day, having already won a bronze with Jon Underwood in the pairs full bore open pairs final, with Scotland's Angus McLeod and Ian Shaw taking the silver medal.

Brickell was also collecting a second medal, having earlier won a bronze with Clive Bramley in the pairs skeet.

"I thought I'd lost it there at the end but I just stayed with it and I'm delighted," said Newbury-based Brickell after his gold.

"This is the end of 18 months of work for me so I'd like to thank all my coaches."

Hammond's victory came a day after he and Neil Stirton won the 50m rifle prone pairs and added to the 50m rifle three-positions singles silver and pairs bronze he picked up earlier in the competition.

He fired a winning score of 696.9 for his second gold at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range, with Australia's Warren Potent second on 695.4.

After a closely fought battle for the medals, Hammond was relieved to have got his hands on a gold.

"I've had my fair share of rough finals over the years but am delighted to get there," he said.

"I knew I was shooting well and now it's just relief."
