Scotland win shooting gold

Scotland shooters Kay Copland and Jen McIntosh won Commonwealth Games gold in the women's 50m rifle prone pairs.

Silver went to England's Michelle Smith and Sharon Lee with Indian pair Meena Kumari and Tejaswini Sawant third.

Copland and McIntosh tied with the English pair on 1,169 points but took the gold on a higher x-ring count, an inner ring within the maximum 10 ring.

England's Richard Brickell and Clive Bramley won bronze in the men's skeet pairs, coming third on an x-ring count.

Brickell and Bramley matched the 191 scored by Jason Caswell and Richard McBride, but their Canadian opponents' greater precision proved decisive.

Copland and McIntosh's victory, which secured Scotland's fourth gold medal in all at the Delhi Games, was won in challenging conditions.

"It was pretty tough. The wind was up. It was quite strong. We shoot on a reasonably sheltered range back home so it was bit of a struggle," said McIntosh.

"It is an absolutely incredible feeling to win. Very satisfying. I hoped we were capable of gold but I didn't quite expect it."

On edging the English pair out for the gold, she added: "We quite often shoot together so it is good to beat them.

"We're Great Britain team-mates and there is plenty of banter between us but I'm not going to lie to you, it feels good to win."

Copland said: "It's a total shock to win. The wind was tough and I was saved by my team-mate. I couldn't get it right but we've won gold so it doesn't matter."

Lee, who won Commonwealth silver in the same event alongside Helen Spittles in 2006, admitted that she was disappointed by her own performance.

"It's always frustrating to lose on countback. But those are the rules. It was windy at the range, very difficult to read, and I was struggling a lot," she said.

"I wasn't very good today, but Michelle shot very well. I'm happy for her."
