Scots win thrilling tennis gold

Scotland's Colin Fleming and Joss Rae claimed a superb Commonwealth Games gold with a three-set victory in the tennis mixed doubles final in Delhi.

Fleming and Rae saw off Australian top seeds Paul Hanley and Anastasia Rodionova 7-6 (9-7) 6-7 (2-7) 6-2.

The Aussies had already won gold medals in the men's and women's doubles.

England's Ken Skupski and Sarah Borwell won the mixed doubles bronze medal play-off, beating compatriots Ross Hutchins and Anna Smith 4-6 6-3 6-2.

Fleming and Rae made a nervous start against the experienced Australian partnership but fought back from 4-0 down in the first set to force a tie-break, saving two set points before edging it.

And the Scots refused to crumble despite continued pressure in the second set, recovering breaks of serve twice in succession as the forced another tie-break, only for the Aussies to dominate it.

With the match level, Australia might have been seen as favourites, but it was Fleming and Rae who controlled the decider, moving 3-0 clear and coming through a tense game on the Rae serve at 4-2 before she sealed victory with a rasping forehand winner.

Gold delight for Fleming and Rae

Somdev Devvarman of India became the first Commonwealth Games men's singles champion as he cruised to a 6-4 6-2 win over Greg Jones of Australia.

Rodionova earlier continued her superb Games as she teamed up with Sally Peers to beat compatriots Jessica Moore and Olivia Rogowska 6-3 2-6 6-3 to take gold in the women's doubles.

Sania Mirza and Rushmi Chakravarthi defeated fellow Indians Nirpama Sanjeev and Poojashree Venkatesha 6-4 6-2 in the bronze medal play-off.
