India's Narang beats Bindra to shooting gold

Shooting bronze for England as India claim gold

India's Gagan Narang earned gold in the 10m air rifle by beating his pairs partner Abhinav Bindra and breaking his own world record.

Narang won with 703.6 points, while Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra, with whom Narang won the 10m air rifle pairs gold, was on 698 points.

England's James Huckle took the bronze with 693.5 points.

Narang earlier shot a perfect 600 out of 600 to equal his own world record, shot at the Beijing World cup in 2008.

In the final round he added 103.6 points to surpass the record with 703.6 points and secure India's sixth gold medal of the Games.

Following his victory Narang was quick to give thanks to his partner-turned-rival.

"Bindra and I go back a long way," he said. "I was still trying to get into my shooting shoes when Abhinav was already there. We share a good relationship, there is a lot to learn from each other."

Since becoming the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at an Olympics when he won the 10m air rifle event at Beijing in 2008, Abhinav Bindra has become a star in India.

He was not initially selected for India's Commonwealth Games shooting squad but on Sunday he was chosen to lead the Indian team at the opening ceremonies.

Despite losing to his shooting partner, Bindra was magnanimous in defeat: "Narang is on fire," he said. "I am delighted for him. He is an outsanding shooter - one of the best shooters in the world and he has been very consistent over the last few years."

India also claimed gold and silver in the women's 25m pistol singles. Anisa Sayyed scored 786.8 points to win gold and Rahi Sarnobat secured silver with 781.0. They had won the pairs event on Tuesday.

In the men's double trap pairs England's Scott Steven and Stevan Walton pipped India's Ronjan Sodhi and Asher Noria to the gold.

The English pair won with 189 points to India's 188. Benjamin Cheng Jie Khor and Seng Chye Khor from Malaysia took bronze with 185 points.

India finished the day's shooting with another gold in the men's 50m pistol with Omkar Singh scoring 653.6 points.

Bin Gai from Singapore scored 649.6 points to secure the silver and India's Lim Swee Hon grabbed bronze with 644.7 points.
