England women see off Canada

England's women registered their second victory of the Commonwealth Games with a 4-1 win over Canada in Pool B.

Diana Roemer put the Canadians into a surprise lead but Kate Walsh levelled, and Alex Danson, Charlotte Craddock and Georgie Twigg scored from close range.

England's men won a scrappy opening Pool B game against Trinidad & Tobago - Simon Mantell scored two in a 4-0 win.

Earlier, Scotland's men were thumped 9-0 by world champions Australia in their second Pool A game in Delhi.

The Scots had lost 3-0 to Pakistan in their opening match, on Tuesday, and things did not get any easier against the Australians.

Veteran full-back Luke Doerner scored a hat-trick for the Kookaburras, who have won each of the three Commonwealth titles since the sport was introduced in 1998.

Australia led 5-0 at half-time, thanks chiefly to a Chris Cirilello brace and Rob Hammond's stunning reverse flick.

Simon Orchard and Des Abbott completed the rout to leave Scotland without a win from their opening two games.

England's women had to come from behind against a Canada side ranked 19th in the world.

Captain Walsh levelled for England from their fifth penalty corner after Roemer had but Canada in front from the penalty spot.

After the break, Danson turned neatly on the edge of the D to leave two Canadian defenders in her wake before sending a fizzing reverse-stick shot into the far corner from a tight angle.

Craddock nudged in a Danson cross-shot to make it 3-1 before Twigg tapped in after Crista Cullen's shot from a penalty corner had been half stopped.

Afterwards, coach Danny Kerry focused on the playing conditions and accused the Games organisers of "living in ivory towers".

He said: "To play elite sport in 40C and 80% humidity is inappropriate and dangerous. We made representations before the Games and just hit brick walls."
