Scotland's team members appear to be enjoying the village in Delhi
Commonwealth Games medal hopeful Ashlea McManus has praised the athletes' village in Delhi despite the heavy criticism it has received. Her Team Scotland bosses highlighted unfinished facilities last week. But the wrestler said: "It's lovely. It's not at all what we expected coming in here. Everything is almost done. "The village is beautiful, the accommodation is nice, it is clean, it's hot, it's everything we could have expected and more." Team Scotland had delayed the departure of their first group of athletes because of concerns about hygiene and security at the athletes' village. But Commonwealth Games organisers responded to the concerns of the Scots and a number of other team delegations. | To bring home a piece of hardware is definitely within my reach and within my expectations Scottish wrestler Ashley McManus |
And, although Scotland's British tennis number one, Elena Baltacha, was one of a handful of competitors to pull out of the event, McManus believes the Games can be a success. "It's bustling," the 27-year-old said of the athletes' village. "You walk down the street and you get people of every other nation. "We aren't underway in terms of the competition, but the atmosphere is great. "The food is great, it is open 24 hours, so we have everything we need right here within the athletes' village." Canada-born McManus, who competes for Scotland as her father is from Blackburn, West Lothian, has her weigh-in on 7 October ahead of the start of her own freestyle 72kg competition the following day. McManus won silver at the Commonwealth Championships in 2009. And she is hopeful of returning with a medal as women's wrestling is introduced to the Games for the first time - men's wrestling being last included in 2002. "I've been training for it, so to bring home a piece of hardware is definitely within my reach and within my expectations," she told BBC Scotland. "Wrestling is really lucky, because our training facility has been built within the village itself, so we actually have a place to train here. "We don't have to go outside the village to train, which is a godsend, because traffic in India, especially in Delhi at the moment with the road closures for the Commonwealth Games, is insane to say the least."
