Martin plays for Essex side Old Loughtonians |
Ipswich hockey player Harry Martin is hoping to use Delhi 2010 to prove he is worth a place at the London Olympics. The 17-year-old will represent England in the Commonwealth Games, set to begin on 3 October, but admits he has 2012 on his mind. He told BBC Radio Suffolk: "That's my ambition at the moment, to be in the squad building up to it and that's my aim ultimately. "It would be unreal, I can't even imagine it right now." Martin is the youngest member of the England's men's team going to India, and despite making his debut for Great Britain at this summer's Four Nations the youngster is surprised to make the cut. "I was told it was a possibility at the start of the summer, but it's obviously a shock as I'm one of the youngest and quite inexperienced," he said. "I think they're looking to give me some experience in a multi-sport event. | Even if I am on the bench hopefully I'll be getting some decent game time |
"They've all been pretty welcoming and they just treat you as another member of the squad." England get their campaign for a medal underway against Trinidad & Tobago on 6 October and Martin, who plays for Old Loughtonians, is hoping to see plenty of action. "There's the group stages and then placing matches after that, I think you're guaranteed six matches," he continued. "I'm in the 16 that will play in every match, in hockey subs are used a lot, so even if I am on the bench hopefully I'll be getting some decent game time."
