18-year-old Frank Bruno bursts on to the boxing scene in 1982 as the youngest ever ABA heavyweight champion In 1989 Bruno makes his second world heavyweight title attempt but is beaten by Mike Tyson in five rounds Bruno becomes one of the most famous and popular faces in Britain and is much in demand as a pantomime star Back in the ring Bruno re-establishes his boxing credentials with a second round victory over Jose Ribalta in April 1992 1993 sees another attempt at the WBC heavyweight title but defending champion Lennox Lewis beats Bruno in seven rounds In 1995 Bruno finally gets his belt when he beats Oliver McCall to become WBC heavyweight champion in a 12 round decision Bruno gets another shot at old adversary Mike Tyson when he defends his WBC heavyweight crown in Las Vegas in 1996 Bruno is outclassed by Tyson in three rounds and afterwards announces his retirement from professional boxing Bruno keeps his profile high with numerous public apperances on television and at sporting events In 2001 Bruno announces he will stand as a Tory MP in the general election under the slogan 'Don't be a plank, vote for Frank' Bruno gets back in training in 2002 to run the London Marathon A public appearance with Audley Harrison in May fuels talk of a Bruno comeback
