By Keir Murray

2249: I'll post a story a little bit later with quotes from the post-fight press conference. All the best!

2246: Well, that was incredibly disappointing. Best wishes to Nicky Cook and let's hope he gets the best of treatment to solve his back problem. For Ricky Burns, whether it's a unification bout at Edinburgh Castle or a move up to lightweight, there will be surely be more glamorous nights in his career than this one.

2244: Phil Goodlad, ringside: "That will be the end of Nicky Cook's career. What now for Burns though? This fight was brought to Liverpool to heighten his profile. That has not happened here."

Derek in Carfin, by text to 80295: "Cook should never have been in the same ring as Ricky. How can a guy with a serious back problem have been passed medically fit to fight? So much for Cook springing a surprise and knocking Ricky out."

An anonymous text: "Burns should be getting a new tattoo then go fishing with mates to celebrate."

2240: The fight lasted just 93 seconds.

2239: Promoter Frank Warren defends the fitness of the challenger, saying he passed all the necessary tests. But how did Cook manage to get through all his rounds of sparring?

2238: Burns says he wants the Ring Magazine belt and to fight Mzonke Fana to prove he is the best fighter in the super-featherweight division.

2237: Ricky Burns: "I'm a wee bit disappointed after all the training and for all the fans who have come down for the fight."

2235: A rather deflated Ricky Burns applauds Nicky Cook as he is carried from the ring. It's tough on the champion too. He has not had the chance to impress the fight fans.

2233: Phil Goodlad ringside: "Cook looks in a lot of pain in his corner. Stretcher now at ringside. He has been standing up but is now lying on the canvas. The doctors will be concerned that the injury is near Cook's spine."

2232: Talk about blink and you'll miss it? Phil Goodlad says: "What a farce. Burns wins after three knockdowns in 90 seconds. Cook took vicious rabbit punch and never recovered. Fans not happy."

2230: Oh, dear. Let's hope Cook is going to be OK. He has had problems with his back for a while now, but how on earth was he passed fit enough to fight. You cannot fault his bravery - he wanted to go on, but the pain is evident on his face.

2228: Cook goes down again, clutching his back. The ref gives him a standing count and waves Cook forward but seconds later his corner throw in the towel. Burns wins!

2227: Six seconds gone and Cook is in dreadful pain. His back looks to be giving him real trouble.

2226: First punch from Burns has Cook in trouble. He is down!

2225: Great to hear from some fight fans in England. Deano in Mansfield texts: "Cook is gonna spring a major surprise tonight and ko Burns."

2223: The MC is doing his stuff, cranking up the tension, introducing the boxers and listing their records.

2222: Help ma boab! Ricky Burns smiles broadly as he makes his way through the crowd. His music of choice is some crazy rave music that leaves a man of my age with a headache.

2220: Nicky Cook enters the ring, looking cool. His theme tune is I've Got The Power by Snap!

2219: Phew, and here was me thinking it might be a boxer(!) Thankfully, it's a fight fan - male - and he's belting out a chorus of "Ricky Burns' Tartan Army".

2218: Good heavens...! Phil reports the first bare chest of the evening in the Echo Arena... More to follow...

David Wallace, Aberdeen, by text to 80295: "There will be a big Scottish contingent tonight, they'll be behind Burns every round!"

2211: The fighters are about to enter the arena. The adrenaline will be pumping, the boxers must be champing at the bit.

2209: Tony Bellew pleases the home fans - sort of - with a rather low-key points win over Derby's Ovill McKenzie.

2006: Cook has been suffering from a degenerative spinal condition that has forced him to rest when the pain flares up.

2203: The one major thing that would suggest Ricky Burns is the favourite for tonight's bout is that Nicky Cook has fought only once since March 2009 - that a points win over Youssef Al Hamidi in May this year.

2200: Phil Goodlad reports a sighting of one of Burns' fans looking worse for wear. "Just spotted my first 'see you, Jimmy' hat of the night. The guy's unbalanced poise points to a long and liquid bus journey to Merseyside from Lanarkshire." Uh-oh.

2157: I'd need to dig out my big-print map of the UK to figure out which is nearer to Liverpool - Coatbridge or Dagenham. Both fighters have a loyal fan base and will get noisy backing. For Ricky, much as he loves to give his supporters something to cheer about, he views "a boxing ring as a boxing ring", which is to say he'll fight anywhere.

Willie, by text to 80295: "Burns is too fit, fresh and busy. Late round stoppage of Cook who looks good in spurts, but too infrequently."

Rikki in Inverness, by text to 80295: "Looking forward to this! Can't see Burns' fight going past the sixth. He has too much for Cook and a KO looks like a good bet."

2154: From Phil Goodlad at the Echo Arena, Liverpool: "Who's going to win tonight? Who better to ask than former world champion Alex Arthur, who is ringside. Arthur is going for Burns to win on points."

2152: We're in to round nine of the Tony Bellew-Ovill McKenzie bout. Not long to go, folks.

2150: However, "Cookie" lost his belt to Roman Martinez in Manchester in March 2009. Martinez is, of course, the man Ricky Burns beat to take possession of the belt in September last year.

2148: In 2007, he lost to Steven Luevano in London when challenging for the WBO featherweight title but finally got his hands on a world title belt in September 2008 when he moved up to super-featherweight and beat Edinburgh's Alex Arthur on points.

2145: Cook has worked his way through the ranks, winning the WBF intercontinental super-featherweight title in 2001, then the Commonwealth title at featherweight in 2003 and the European featherweight belt in 2004.

2142: It's amazing to think that Nicky Cook's first professional fight was back in 1998, a first-round knock-out of Sean Grant. Burns' debut came three years later, a points win over Woody Greenaway in Glasgow's Kelvin Hall.

2140: Ricky Burns looks confident in his dressing room and tells viewers: "I'm feeling really good. I can't wait to get out there and put on a performance. Whatever Nicky comes out with, we've got it covered."

2138: I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the bout will go. Maybe some Nicky Cook fans out there can stick up for their man and take issue with Billy Nelson's comments? If you'd like to get in touch, please text 80295. Thanks!

2136: The bold Phil interviewed Billy Nelson earlier this week. The trainer said Nicky Cook was "going to have his hands full on Saturday night" and that he had never seen Ricky Burns look so fit in his career.

2134: BBC reporter Phil Goodlad at ringside has texted 80295: "Burns' trainer Billy Nelson looking relaxed standing to my right. He says his man is 'in the best shape of his life'".

2131: Burns, at 28, is three years younger that Cook. They have almost identical records. Burns' is 31 wins and two defeats, while the English fighter's is 30 wins and two defeats, though with 16 knock-outs he is more likely to stop an opponent than the champion.

2128: I was at Ricky Burns' last three fights and although his first two title defences have not been as exhilarating as the bout when he beat Roman Martinez to win the WBO super-featherweight title, he did all that was required to retain his belt.

2125: Liverpool's Tony Bellew and Ovill McKenzie are in the ring now, in round three. Once their fight for the Commonwealth and vacant British light-heavyweight titles is over, it'll be Burns v Cook.

2122:BBC reporter Phil Goodlad at ringside texts 80295 to say: "The front of the fight programme asks, will Burns be burnt or will Cook be cooked? We'll be finding out soon."

2120: For Ricky Burns, the champion from Coatbridge, this bout is a move by promoter Frank Warren to raise his profile around the UK. But Burns has been saying in the build-up to this bout that there is no way he is taking anything for granted. He knows Nicky Cook, 31, is no mug.

2119: My colleague Phil Goodlad is ringside at the Echo Arena in Liverpool and will be sending us his observations from the safe side of the ropes. Me? I'm cowering in Glasgow and cannot wait for the bout to get started, around 30-40 minutes from now.
