Nottingham's Carl Froch (right) has to come to the small Danish town of Herning to defend his WBC super-middleweight crown against former WBA title-holder Mikkel Kessler
Froch, making the third defence of his title, makes a cautious start and it is Kessler who dictates proceedings in the early rounds, stalking the champion and landing with his stiff left jab
Froch thinks he has a knockdown in round five, but referee Michael Griffin rules that it was a slip, although replays suggest there may have been contact as Kessler was backpedalling
Froch lets the fight slip away from him in the middle rounds, with Kessler still doing the more eye-catching work. However, Froch is given hope in the ninth when he opens up a nasty gash above Kessler's left eye
The final two rounds unravel into a bar-room brawl, with Froch's corner fully aware their man needs a knockout and Kessler showing tremendous heart to soak up some huge punches
And it is the home fighter who is awarded a unanimous decision 117-111, 115-113 and 116-112 on the judges' scorecards. Froch is not happy with the result, but in truth he can have few complaints
For Froch, it is his first defeat in 27 pro fights and he now needs to win his next bout against German Arthur Abraham to keep his hope of reaching the last four of the Super Six tournament alive
