DeGale's last fight was against Nathan King in early December |
James DeGale has been offered the chance to meet former amateur rival George Groves on the undercard of David Haye's world title defence on 3 April. DeGale has grabbed the headlines since winning gold at the 2008 Olympics, but Groves beat him on his way to the 2006 British amateur middleweight title. "We are deadly serious about making this fight for 3 April," said Adam Booth, who trains both Haye and Groves. "It's a fight George wants to take now, as he's desperate to prove a point." Booth feels there was no better place for the fight than on the same bill as Haye's first defence of his world heavyweight title, against John Ruiz at the MEN Arena. | 606: DEBATE |
"You can't get a bigger stage than a world heavyweight championship fight," he said. "Not only will the world's media be watching, but Groves and DeGale would also box in front of a sold-out crowd at the MEN Arena. There would be plenty of incentive for both men. "George doesn't want to wait and risk the fight never happening - he wants to meet DeGale as soon as possible and he wants to do it on the biggest stage possible. "Both fighters have improved dramatically since their first meeting and a rematch as pros would be a great spectacle for British boxing fans. "George is ready to do this on 3 April - we're just waiting for an answer from James DeGale."
