Paul McCloskey says he would like to fight Amir Khan

Paul McCloskey says he would be "crazy" not to accept a fight against Amir Khan but believes it is unlikely that he will face Khan in his next fight.

The European light-welterweight champion says he is likely to defend his title in February or March, 2010.

"Since my last fight, all I've heard is Amir Khan and if that happens then brilliant but I don't think it will.

"It is more likely that I will defend a couple of times and then chase after the likes of Khan," said McCloskey.

"I'm not sure yet if it will be a mandatory or a voluntary defence but if it is against the mandatory challenger Giuseppe Lauri I will be happy enough.

"If the Khan thing came along I'd be crazy not to take it but it's all about politics and he's in America at the moment talking about megafights.

"If that opportunity came my way I'd jump at it but the best thing for me is probably to get a few defences under my belt and then move onto the next level.

"Khan is a very good young fighter but I have fought better boxers in my last eight fights than he has and I'd be very confident going into a fight against him."

Dungiven boxer McCloskey secured his European title with a comfortable points win over Spaniard Daniel Rasilla in Magherafelt in November.
