Fry (left) was eventually undone by Cleverly's power |
Nathan Cleverly knocked out Courtney Fry in the eighth round to defend his British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight titles in London. Wales's Cleverly, 22, was heavily favoured to retain his belts against 34-year-old Fry at the York Hall. However, the 1998 Commonwealth Games champion drew on all his experience to frustrate his younger opponent. But Cleverly caught Fry and pinned him to the ropes with a flurry of blows in the eighth before the ref stepped in. The Welshman had failed to dominate but was well ahead on points when he ended Fry's challenge. Cleverly extended his unbeaten record to 18 matches and has now stopped his last five opponents. Fry, who lacked nothing in energy but came up short in terms of punching power, suffered his third professional defeat.
