Saunders last fought at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 |
Khalid Yafai, Bradley Saunders and Tommy Stubbs won gold for England at the European Union amateur boxing championships in Odense, Denmark. Flyweight Yafai won his final 13-3, while fellow Beijing Olympian Bradley Saunders won his light-welterweight final by the same margin. Manchester light-flyweight Stubbs ran out a 14-3 winner in his final. Obed Mbwakongo lost in the light-heavyweight final and Thomas Stalker in the lightweight final. The victory by Yafai, who beat Ireland's Declan Geraghty, was most impressive, coming after three wins consisting of one stoppage and two triumphs by at least 10 points. The Birmingham boxer is unbeaten since his early defeat to top Cuban Andriy Laffita in Beijing. Stockton-on-Tees' Saunders, also unbeaten since Beijing, put in another superb performance to breeze past the vastly experienced former World Championships bronze medallist Gyula Kate of Hungary. And Manchester's Stubbs, fighting for the first time in the tournament after two byes, oozed promise with a classy display to overwhelm Poland's Lukasz Maszczyk for easily the biggest win of his career. London light-heavyweight Mbwakongo was heavily knocked out in round two of his final against Hungary's Imre Szello, while Stalker lost 10-4 to Germany's Eugen Burhard. Ireland matched England's three gold medals and claimed the best team prize by virtue of having one more fighter in the finals.
