Burns celebrates a second successful title defence against Michael Gomez |
Ricky Burns will aim to defend his Commonwealth super-featherweight belt for the third time against Steve Foster Jr in Glasgow on 19 June. Burns, 26, from Coatbridge, won the vacant title against Osumana Akaba in September 2008. Fellow Scottish boxer Alex Arthur will be on the undercard for his first fight since rising to lightweight. "After I've done the business against Foster Jr I'm going after Kevin Mitchell's British title," said Burns. Burns has already successfully defended his title twice - against Yakubu Amidu of Ghana in November, and against Dublin-born Michael Gomez in March. And he already has his sights firmly set on claiming Englishman Mitchell's British belt. "I'm gradually cleaning up domestically," said Burns. "Mitchell has been running from me for years. "This time last year people were telling me that I'm not a puncher, but I've won my last two inside the distance and I'm going to be handing out some more pain to Foster at Bellahouston Sports Centre. "I'm aiming to send out a message to Mitchell, and to do that I need to knock Foster out, and that's what is going to happen." However, former WBO world title challenger Foster said: "Burns got lucky by beating up on a faded Michael Gomez. "But I feel really fresh and I'm punching harder than ever. "Last time I came to Scotland I nearly knocked out Alex Arthur. This time around there will be no mistake. "I'm going after Burns from the start, and his style won't hurt me. "I'm going to take that title away from him to make up for the disappointment against Arthur." Meanwhile, after losing his WBO World super-featherweight belt to Nicky Cook, 30-year-old Arthur, from Edinburgh, is returning in an eight-round bout for the first time since moving up a division lightweight.
