Nathan Cleverly celebrates his win over Tony Oakey |
Nathan Cleverly has had a late change of opponent for the second defence of his Commonwealth light-heavyweight title in Swindon on 13 February. Ghanaian James Obede Toney has pulled out injured, so Cleverly now faces Samson "The Hammer" Onyango. Kenyan Onyango has a good 18-3 record, with 12 stoppages, although he has fought mostly at super middleweight. "Onyango looks just as good as Toney, if not a bit better," said unbeaten Cleverly, who boasts a 14-0 record. "But I'm buzzing after defending my title in style just before Christmas, and I'm ready for another action-packed display next Friday. "It will be a St Valentine's weekend massacre - with all the big shots coming from me. | 606: DEBATE |
"I've had a great training camp and it really doesn't matter who [promoter] Frank Warren puts in front of me, I'm going to war and I'm going to win in style." Blackwood product Cleverly, 21, beat Tony Oakey for the title in October and made his first defence with a knockout of Douglas Otieno in December. Cleverly has won four of his contests by stoppage and the talented Welshman is being lined up for a shot at British champion Dean Francis. The show at the Oasis Sports Centre will also feature local star Jamie Cox, who won a gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and has built an impressive nine-fight unbeaten record as a professional.
