Simpson stops Truscott for title

John Simpson
Simpson says it is one of the most important fights of his career

John Simpson claimed the Commonwealth featherweight title with a stoppage win over Paul Truscott, who sustained an eye injury in Middlesbrough.

Local fighter Truscott looked the sharper of the two in the early rounds, but Greenock's Simpson wobbled Truscott in round four with a big left hook.

A clash of heads in round seven caused swelling under Truscott's right eye and the doctor was called on in the eighth.

He advised referee Howard Foster to call a halt to proceedings.

Truscott, who now has 12 wins and one defeat as a professional, was unhappy that the fight was stopped and Simpson suggested afterwards that he would welcome a rematch.

The 25-year-old Simpson, who now has 19 wins and six losses, will hope that taking the Commonwealth title will edge him closer to a shot at winning back the British title he lost in June to fellow Scot Paul Appleby.
