Price had been looking forward to boxing in Liverpool |
Liverpool super-heavyweight David Price has revealed his disappointment at missing the forthcoming European Championships because of injury. The Olympic bronze medallist misses the tournament, which starts in his home city on Thursday, following surgery on a long-standing hand problem. "A big part of me is disappointed," Price told BBC Radio Merseyside. "If ever there was ever a chance to win a gold medal at the Europeans, for me personally, this was it." Price had surgery on his left hand following the Beijing Olympics and has now entered a period of recuperation. The 25-year-old feels if he had been fully fit there would have been little standing between him and a podium finish at the European Championships.
"There are 17 at my weight, so it's potentially two wins for a medal, four wins for the gold," he said. "There's only one Olympian in the tournament, I've stopped or knocked-out about eight of the others. "But at the same time I've got to think about the long term and looking after myself. "I can't go in it because of this injury and it's just a shame that I'm injured at this point."
