Boxer Mathews wants major honours

Mathews is confident he can win major honours

Liverpool featherweight Derry Mathews has said he is targeting British, European and world title honours.

The 24-year-old former WBU Champion makes his ring return against Kenyan number one John Gicharu on Saturday.

And Mathews who is the mandatory challenger for the British Title told BBC Radio Merseyside he is confident of beating current champion Paul Appleby.

He said: "As soon as I win that British title I want the European belt but I want the WBO Title that Leuvano's got."

Mathews' fight against Gicharu at the Liverpool Olympia on Saturday will be his first outing since losing his unbeaten record and WBU title to Choi Tseveenpurev in April.

Rather than opting to fight away from home against a lowly opponent he has decided to fight an unbeaten opponent in front of his home crowd.

And Mathews said he is keen to do himself justice: "I'm under a lot of pressure, I've got a lot of people going and a lot of people expecting big things from me again.

"I could have boxed someone who had won 10 and lost 20 or won 10 and lost 50 but I want to get in there with an unbeaten opponent who is known to people across the world.

"It's a good fight for me and we'll see how far I can go from it."
