Burke has signed a five-fight, 18 month deal with Fight Academy |
Liverpool lightweight Stephen Burke is hoping to kick-start his professional career after signing for Sheffield-based promoters Fight Academy. Burke won European Bronze in 1997, but has struggled with injuries and relative inactivity ever since. The 29-year-old has fought just 7 times since turning professional in 2005. "With me getting on a bit now I just want to get busy and hopefully by early next season I'll be ready for a title shot." he told BBC Radio Merseyside. Burke has been out of action since last December after injuring his right hand against Billy Smith. He did not realise the serious nature of the injury at the time but insists the problem is now solved. "For a couple of months I couldn't pick things up or open doors properly. "I've just had to get back into it. I've had no problems with it (in training). "I've strapped it up well and we'll see how it goes." Burke has signed a multi-fight deal with Fight Academy and he makes his first appearance for them in Sheffield on Saturday night.
