Rhondda's Barrie Jones has lost just one of his 16 fights |
Barrie Jones will fight unbeaten Kell Brook for the British welterweight crown in London on Saturday. Welshman Jones is an 11th hour stand-in as champion Brook's initial opponent was champion Kevin McIntyre. But McIntyre has been relieved of his belt after twice withdrawing from his second defence due to injury so the title has been declared vacant. Brook said: "I'm delighted a real fighter like Jones will be fighting for the title." | 606: DEBATE |
Yorkshireman Brook, originally the mandatory challenger, has knocked-out nine of his 16 victims while Rhondda prospect Jones' last fight was a defeat to fellow countryman Tony Doherty for the Welsh title. But that 10-round points defeat in March is the only blemish on the 23-year-old rangy southpaw's 16-fight record. "I watched the fight against Doherty and I was really impressed by his heart and stamina," said 22-year-old Sheffield scrapper Brook. "He has shown that he is one of the top young fighters in Britain. "It's going to be a great fight but after all the messing about with McIntyre I'm more determined than ever to win the title."
