Scotland's Paul Appleby won the British featherweight title on a unanimous decision after a gruelling battle with his compatriot John Simpson in Glasgow. Victory would have given champion Simpson the Lonsdale belt outright but two judges gave Appleby victory by one point and the third by two. There were some fierce exchanges early on and Simpson took a standing count in the fifth despite appearing to slip. In the end it was Appleby's courage in his first 12-rounder that saw him win.
