Watson is hoping to sign with a major promoter

Unbeaten Huyton lightweight John Watson will box over six rounds for the first time against John Baguley on Saturday.

The 24-year-old former England international is also hoping to sign with a major promoter ahead of the new boxing season in September.

He told BBC Radio Merseyside: "There's a few things happening at the moment.

"Hopefully I will be signing with one of the top promoters for the start of the new season and get a five-fight deal on the televised shows."

Watson won the 2004 senior Amateur Boxing Association championships up at light welterweight.

In the same year he acted as Amir Khan's chief sparring partner ahead of the Athens Olympics.

The two men's camps have remained in contact and Watson is hopeful they will work together again soon.

"Peter McCormack (Watson's coach) has organised for me to spar Amir Khan," Watson said.

"Unfortunately I couldn't get it in before this fight on Saturday because we couldn't fit a day around it, as he trains of a day."

Watson, who is unbeaten in his five professional fights, also works full time as an electrician.

"Hopefully after the fight, maybe next week or the week after we'll get up there again and do some rounds with him," he added.
