Tarver targets Calzaghe contest

Antonio Tarver celebrates his win over Clinton Woods.
Tarver also holds the lightly regarded IBO belt

IBF light-heavyweight world champion Antonio Tarver has joined the list of fighters keen to take on Joe Calzaghe.

Tarver won the IBF belt from Calzaghe's fellow Briton Clinton Woods earlier this month and wants the Welshman next.

"Everyone was mentioned as Calzaghe's potential next opponent but me, the true light-heavyweight world champion," said the 39-year-old American.

"I will fight him in the US, in the UK or wherever he wants to fight on my way to unifying the belts this year."

Calzaghe, 36, moved up from super-middleweight to defeat Bernard Hopkins on a split decision at the weekend.

While no official title was at stake, the 45th victory of an unbeaten career has propelled him to the summit of the division.

Four-weight world champion Roy Jones Jr is currently Calzaghe's most likely opponent for what he says will be his final fight.

WBC and WBO middleweight king Kelly Pavlik and WBC light-heavyweight champion champion Chad Dawson have also been mooted.

However, Jones is some way past his best and has not held a world title since losing to Tarver in 2004.

Tarver, who lost to Hopkins in 2006, said: "I beat Roy Jones not once but twice.

"I have also beaten Glen Johnson, Clinton Woods and many more top fighters in the light-heavyweight division."

Calzaghe, meanwhile, has ruled out a rematch with Hopkins, 43.

"His style doesn't gel into an exciting fight so of course I won't give him a rematch," said the Newbridge southpaw.

"Why should I? It was pretty close, but I felt I won the fight."
