Former WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko will fight Jameel McCline in Munich on 22 September in his first bout in nearly three years. Klitschko, 36, has not fought since an eighth-round win over Britain's Danny Williams on 11 December 2004.
Back and knee problems forced him to take a year off and eventually retire with a 35-2 record, with 34 knockouts.
"I want to make history and be the heavyweight champion at the same time as my brother," Vitali said.
Wladimir Klitschko, 31, holds the IBF belt, although both he and his brother have vowed never to meet in the ring.
McCline, 37, has a 38-7-3 record with 23 knockouts. He lost a WBA title shot to then-champion Nikolay Valuev in January when he injured his knee in the third round.
Klitschko originally hoped his comeback would be against current WBC champion Oleg Maskaev in Moscow, but after months of negotiations, he stood aside to let number one challenger Samuel Peter fight the Russian first.
