King saw his fighter Nikolay Valuev lose his WBA world title on Saturday |
Leading promoter Don King says he is determined to see a unified heavyweight world title by 2008. There are currently four different title holders of the WBA, WBO, WBC and IBF belts but King says a unified crown would "restore the magic".
"To have one undisputed, identifiable world champion would make everything better," he said.
Asked how long it would take for one boxer to hold a unified title, King predicted "within 18 months".
Kazakhstan's Oleg Maskaev (WBC), Uzbekistan's Ruslan Chagaev (WBA), Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko (IBF) and American Shannon Briggs (WBO) hold the heavyweight title in boxing's four governing bodies.
American Mike Tyson was the last undisputed heavyweight world champion in 1989-1990, while Briton Lennox Lewis was recognised by the WBA, WBC and IBF as world champion in 1999-2000.
King was speaking after one of his charges, giant Russian Nikolay Valuev, lost the WBA heavyweight title to Chagaev in Stuttgart on Saturday.
"I would have had much more of a say in unifying the belts if the big guy had won," added King. "But we are going to work to make it happen."
Following Chagaev's win, the three other heavyweight champions are scheduled to step into the ring before the end of August.
