Macca confirmed on Calzaghe card
Enzo Maccarinelli (right) v Marcelo Dominguez

WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli will fight at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on 3 March.

No opponent has yet been named for the Welshman, who saw a possible 9 December fight ruled out when Scott Harrison was passed fit to top an ExCel Centre bill.

Swansea man Maccarinelli, 26, starred at the Millennium Stadium in July with a stunning KO of Fabian Dominguez.

His bout will head the undercard of Joe Calzaghe's WBO super middleweight defence against Peter Manfredo.

He has all the tools to dominate the cruiserweight division

Promoter Frank Warren on Maccarinelli

Promoter Frank Warren has promised more title fights and an Amir Khan appearance on the Cardiff show which, he says, will be the biggest ever staged in Wales.

Calzaghe's bout will be screened live but in the early evening in the US, as it will go out at prime-time in the UK.

The Dominguez win and the retirement of Johnny Nelson secured the WBO belt for Maccarinelli, last month's stoppage of Mark Hobson taking his big-punching record to 25-1 (19 KOs).

"Enzo is one of the most exciting fighters in the the world at the moment," said Warren.

"He caused quite a stir when he went to the States recently, and over the next 18 months I believe he will emerge as a global star.

"He has all the tools to dominate the cruiserweight division."

Warren has defended the decision for Calzaghe to meet former reality TV star Manfredo ahead of more highly regarded fighters like Mikkel Kessler and Clinton Woods.

"I've been talking to [Kessler's promoter] Mogens Palle, but his offer was subject to all the organisations allowing the fight to go on," said Warren.

Clinton Woods was not a name as far as [US TV company] HBO were concerned

"But the IBF were going to make Joe fight his mandatory contender, and the WBC wanted Kessler to take on theirs, and it basically fell apart.

"We made Clinton Woods an offer and his camp came back and said they wanted to do something joint with us.

"But Woods was not a name as far as [US TV company] HBO were concerned.

"He was a name on the list, but not the name. Joe Calzaghe is the name.

"Clinton did really well against Glen Johnson, and he got a taste of fighting in front of a big crowd.

"He may come back in the future. I don't know what he is going to do next, but good luck to him."
