Brian Magee is happy fighting at light-heavyweight |
Brian Magee won his first fight in the light-heavyweight division with a 58-56 points victory over Paul David in Barnsley on Friday night. The former IBO champion from Belfast was back in the ring six months after his British super-middleweight title defeat to Carl Froch.
The 31-year-old dropped his Sheffield opponent in the fourth round.
"I am aiming for the Commonwealth title in January then beyond that to a world title," said Magee.
Magee floored David for an eight count with a sharp right hand in round
four of their six-round contest but took some punishment himself and ended the
fight nursing a bloody nose.
For a fighter who only turned professional in February and boasted just four
previous wins from five fights, David showed some classy touches and gave Magee some difficulty.
But Magee believes he has now wiped the memories of his exciting 11th-round
stoppage loss to Froch from his mind and can now concentrate on continuing his
career at the higher weight.
Magee added: "It was just the kind of fight I needed after six months out and
him being a Brendan Ingle fighter I knew he was going to come to fight and try
to win.
"I feel so much better at light-heavyweight and this was the start of a new
chapter for me.
"I am not making excuses for the Froch fight but I did not do myself justice
that night and the thought of retirement never crossed my mind for a moment."
