Woods to fight Johnson in Bolton
Clinton Woods
Woods has won 39 of his 43 professional fights
Sheffield's Clinton Woods will defend his IBF light heavyweight title against Jamaica's Glen Johnson at the Bolton Arena on Saturday 2 September.

The fight will be staged by Frank Warren after he outbid Woods' usual promoter Dennis Hobson.

Woods, 34, has drawn with and lost to Johnson in two previous encounters.

Amir Khan has his ninth professional fight in his home town on the undercard while Michael Jennings meets Takaloo for the fringe WBU welterweight title.

In addition, France's Souleymane M'Baye fights Argentina's Raul Balbi for the WBA light welterweight belt.

The first fight between Woods and Johnson ended in a draw in November 2003, although many observers thought Johnson did enough to win it.

The 37-year-old returned to Sheffield in February 2004 and took a unanimous decision and the IBF crown.

Johnson defended the IBF belt just once, against Roy Jones, before giving it up to fight America's Antonio Tarver.

He took a split decision over Tarver in December 2004 before losing the rematch by unanimous decision last year.

Woods won the vacant IBF crown with an impressive fifth-round knockout of Rico Hoye in 2005 and has defended twice.

There were suggestions Woods' third fight against Johnson would take place in the Jamaican's adoptive Florida, but Johnson is happy to fight in England again.

"I'm looking forward to returning to Britain for a fourth time and reclaiming my IBF title," said Johnson, nicknamed the Road Warrior because of his willingness to travel far and wide for fights.

"I have never lost in the UK so it is a good omen for me to come back. I gave up the title and never lost it in the ring, so Clinton has to beat me to be able to call himself the champion. He will not do that, I can guarantee.

"I've heard that Clinton has commented that he is going to knock me out but I hope he has fully prepared himself to be knocked out."

Sheffield promoter Hobson claims he is set to offer Wales' super middleweight king Joe Calzaghe 1.5m for a fight against Woods this winter, should his charge come through his clash with Johnson.

However, Warren's Sports Network claim they previously offered Woods "a big pay-day" to face Calzaghe, but Woods preferred to fight Johnson for a third time.
